Greetings all,
I have a Ryobi 10″ thickness planer in the shop I work in. Problem is that the last time it was serviced the guy reattached the sharp blades flush with the cutting drum. When I ran a test piece (unknowing) I nearly burned out the motor before I realized that I was getting no shavings. The shop is not my own so buying a better planer is not an option. Can someone please tell me how to adjust the knives properly so that they plane the wood properly (smooth and parallel thickness)?
Help please

(needless to say that I’m never going to use THAT service tech. again !!!)

Ryobi AP 10 planers use a blade setting gauge that comes with the machine, it's a long rectangular tool that's a little bit bigger than the blade. You should have one around there someplace.
Using the jig, the blade is attached to the steel binder plate that goes on top of the blade, and then the whole blade/binder assembly gets bolted onto the planer head with the lip on the back edge of the binder plate registering into a groove in the head.
You shouldn't have to pay a service tech to simply change blades, the setting jig makes the process foolproof. The tech obviously was incompetent if he didn't realize that the blades had to stick out a bit from the head.

Thanks John.
Since it's not my shop I didn't know about the gauge. I'll look around and try to find it.
Thanks again.
