I have the need to dress some maple shorts (6-9 inches long) approximately 1 inch thick X 2 inch wide to make a number of jigs. I have these pieces jointed on edge and one face. Now I need to mill to thickness and even width. I am planning to use my DeWalt735 13inch planner.
Normal wisdom is to plane nothing less than 18 inches long. I agree, but … I have these short pieces.
I have a dim recollection of a published tip or similar instruction for using a sled with a shallow cleat parallel to knife blades. Any recommendations? Would using carpet tape be safe (me, work, machine)?

Just butt them end to end when you put them in the machine.

Try sticking them to a longer board using double sided tape.

My test is this: if the shorts will span the infeed and outfeed roller (in other words, they're longer than the distance between the two rollers) then with care, they're OK to thickness. Use the hint above as well and shoot them thru one right after the other. You'll be OK, just don't stand right behind the infeed side!

There was an article in the last year of Fine Woodworking on doing exactly what you are describing. Sorry can't remember what issue. The author built a sled with a cleat to avoid any tearout.

Hi,
This is not a challenge, but are you sure it was in Fine Woodworking Magazine? I have gone back over the past three years and not found it.
Your mind is probably like mine, a steel trap with a few rusty holes! Any idea of another source?
Thanks for your reply! Like you, I seem to remember a moderately recent article somewhere about this sled!
Sorry Akron...perhaps it was another publication...I'll try to locate the article and the source and let you know. I do buy some other random woodworking mags but mostly FWW.

AkronArt,
I agree with butting the shorts end to end. I would use an extra piece for the last one thru. If there is any snipe it will be one the "extra" piece. I'll also add that you should only remove a small amount of material on each pass.

Is it really saw dust or wood dust?
