i thinned original oil based kilz with mineral spirits
it painted fine and dried well
i did not use all of the thinned paint
after a few days i noticed the paint and mineral spirits had separated
also there was a hard layer of paint between the paint and mineral spirits
am i using the wrong thinner

Kilz is water based. The manufacturer recommends:
"Do not thin for stainblocking applications. A small amount of water may be added for other spray applications."
