Dale,
I love them for surfacing and fine planing work. I use my Lie-Nielsen's and bedrocks for jointing and initail preperation. I have several Japanese and have found not all are created equally. Unfortunately the more expensive ones definately work better.
They definately require careful preperation but most new planes do,even Lie-Nielsens. There is good literature on preperation but the best is a DVD by Harrelson Stanley which can be purchased from his web site http://www.japanesetools.com/. it is not cheap but is well worth it if you need instruction on how to use them which we all do. I also have some Infills like Norris's and the japanese are a little better.Be patient with them.

Thanks Dan
That video is on my Christmas wish list. I hope to get my plane this week and start getting a little practice.
