Wondering on how one would go about popping the grain on figured maple with a “white” presentation. I am going to be making a guitar and want a black/white tiger stripe appearance. Obviously the black would washout the figure in the maple, so I am looking for that intermediate look. What would people recommend for the process? I guess dying the wood white, sealing with cut shellac, then using a heavy bodied glaze or stain pigmented dark (almost black). The final finish will be an instrument shellac. Need any thoughts or ideas. Thanks for the help!

There was a great article in FWW about this. I forget which month, but you can search the archives on the website. They used a Dye first and then an oil finish on top of that. I think...my brain is a little slow today.
Cheers!
