I’ve been asked to design and build 3 lecterns that can tilt and be raised up or down. It also needs to be lightweight because it is lifted off the table it rests on….and of course, beautiful.
I’d like to use the minimum of obvious knobs or levers, but haven’t yet tested a friction solution. Because the lectern needs to be lifted, I question how well that would work in the long term….
At this point, I’m considering brass inserts or t-nuts. I’d appreciate any suggestions.

Sorry it took so long to come up with a reply but we're a little stumped on this one.
One idea that comes to mind regarding the tilting mechanism is described in a project article we published on how to make Thomas Jefferson's writing desk. It features a tilting top that can be set at various angles by setting a pivoting leg in a series of notches.
As for an adjustable height base, have you considered some sort of scissors base? I envision something like the legs on a director's chair that raise the lectern up and down by adjusting the spread of the legs.
If you can provide us with a little more of your design goals, that might get the creative juices flowing.
