I am getting ready to spray (HVLP) the water-based finish (General finishes EF High Performance Polyurethane) on my latest project. The label says that drying time is 2-4 hours. Do I have to wait that long to recoat? With lacquer, I think sequential coats can be sprayed with minimal delay. Is that also true of this finish, or should I wait the 2-4 hours? Thanks.

Craig,
It's best to wait the recommended time between coats. Waterborne finishes are a coalescing finish and behave somewhere between an evaporative finish and a cross-linking finish. Though the film appears dry once the majority of the water/solvents evaporate, the resins are chemically bonding and the slower evaporating solvents are still escaping the film. If you apply multiple coats quickly, it will take the finish a lot longer to cure and harden.
