Thanks for the help Dano on cutting off the box top. It worked great. Now I am ready to put on the hinges. I bought a pair of brass stop hinges. I hate this part. I always have trouble destroying those brass screws. What is the best method for lining up and installing these hinges? I plan on cutting the mortises out with a chisel.

MTB,
You're welcome. I mount the hinge on the bottom first, using a try square to "butt" the side of the leaf against and a marking knife for layout (the first cut is the last cut).
Assuming that the box is out of hardwood the bit should be about 1/64th to 1/32nd smaller in diameter than the

of the screw. You should also use a tapered bit but, if you don't have one a twist bit will do. Dip the screw in paste wax and use a screw driver that fits the slot exactly.
Once the hinges are mounted to the bottom, fold them in the closed position, take some carbon paper (carbon side up), cut them so they are larger than the hinge, place over the hinges, and tape down the ends. Now take the top and carefully place in on the box with the front first aligned with front edge and the front corners, then lower it down so it is flush all the way around. Press firmly over the hinges, there should be an outline of the hinge leaf on the bottom of the top. Good luck.

*Let me add that you could use steel screws, identical in size to the brass screws, for preliminary mounting. After you have that perfect fit replace them with the brass screws. A screwdriver that fits the slot EXACTLY also helps to prevent that amateur look.
