I’m a novice woodworker and new to this forum. I need help with a project. I am soliciting advice on turning a 4′ diameter horizontal slab into the beautiful rustic table it’s destined to be. I live in central Mexico and acquired this big fat slab (cypress, I think) 5 years ago so I figure it is sufficiently dried and ready to be fixed up and sealed. Please tell me what tools and materials will be required and what basic steps I’ll need to follow. Of course, any general advice and tips you may have to offer will also be greatly appreciated. (I have an orbital and a belt sander) Some cracking has occurred that I will need to fill as you can see in photo linked to below.

Thank you for any help you can give me with this project!

Do you have a base - does it need to match ?
If the natural color seems OK - I'd use a hard finish like varnish or poly, - the cracks can be filled or left open. Sand to 120 and apply 3 coats of finish. Rub down the last coat with 4-0 steel wool and wax.

Cut the bottom/top in a plane perpendicular to the length of the piece. Set the piece on a level surface. Rub down both top and bottom surfaces to desired smoothness. Applying wax or polish to keep it smooth.
