Howdy, I’m about to raise the ceiling in my kitchen. I am wondering if I should bother installing foamboard as well as insulation on the new ceiling or not. Worth the increased insulation value?? I would be interested in hearing feedback as foamboard ain’t cheap either. Thanks a lot. Barley

Your probably on the wrong forum. But some advise. All foam board is highly flammable and must be covered with at least 1/2 drywall to be used inside the home.
I presume you are thinking about the poly iso---- type, called R max or such. Foil faced. It does provide good insulation, vapor and thermal barrier. Generally higher insulation value per inch than others.
I have 2" sandwitched between drywall in my house, insulation added above. I am very pleased with it, but lots of cost for the system. I did it for a remodel in a situation that did not allow for any other insulation to be added.
Better cost to results if you can simply add lots of fiberglass or such to the roof cavity.

Barley, try "Breaktime" (Fine Homebuilding forum). Link is up at the top of the page here. I've run to them several times with insulating and other questions. They were of great help!
