I recently picked up some 1×4 tongue and groove pine flooring boards to use in an outdoor storage bench. When I got the boards home I noticed the boards had a waxy texture. Does anyone know if this is a result of milling or an applied product and in either case is there any reason I wont be able to stain and protect the boards for use outside? I reviewed the product specifications online but found nothing referring to the finish.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Do all the boards exhibit this look/feel?
I would try sanding it to see if the paper clogs quickly. It might just be resin from the wood having recently been milled. Also might wipe them with some mineral spirits on a rag to see if it comes off easily.

I've often noticed a "waxiness" on pine. I think it's just the resin. Shouldn't be a problem for you.
That said, T&G pine may not have been the best choice for an outdoor project. If it's exposed to the elements, it'll likely have to be painted. Regularly.

Everything fits, until you put glue on it.
Is this prefinished flooring? I've used prefinished "click" flooring (the kind that snaps together) where the parts that snap together are coated with wax (it appears to be ordinary paraffin), so that there's less friction during the snapping process. Occasionally, some of that wax finds its way onto the surfaces of the boards.

Thanks for the advise everyone, I will try to clean up the boards with some mineral spirits and sand it a bit to take off some of the paraffin or resin or whatever is covering the boards. Pine is a most unwise choice for this project but it's a prototype and I wanted to use an inexpensive wood so I wouldn't cry if I make mistakes.
