Too amny magazines, what to do?
Ok,
If any of you are like me, you probably have a lot of wood working magazines that are just too “good” to throw away. I needed to devise a filing system that would reduce the bulk. Plus, the lovely Mrs. always had comments for me about them being in ideal locations (atleast I thought so, hehehee) around the house. In addition, I could never find the article that I was looking for.
My solution was simple. I bought an accordian folder and labeled the sections; finishing, tables, chairs, benches, tip and tricks, ect (you get the hint). Then I cut out the artices and placed them in the proper section. Now I can review and find what I’m looking for.
The only problem I have is when I bring it out to talk about upcoming projects with friends, the first thing out of their mouth is “Why are showing me your taxes“, hehehee.

I really hate cutting magazines like that up. Destroys the resale value for one thing and someone else might want the mag someday. Since everyone here has a computer why not use a databa program and list favorite articles. Nice thing is you can do a search and everything with the required topic will come up if you do your database correctly. You can search by author, technique, application or whatever. Microsoft office comes with a database application. For a cheap alternative you can download free phone number listing software and use it in the same way. You can search through keywords placed with the reference.
Keep those thin cardboard subsciption cards that seem to be everywhere. they are perfect for mixing epoxy on.

I've been doing the same thing for years. I mentioned it here once before and caught grief for it. Seems lots of people treasure these mags. To me 90% of them are ads or stuff that I learned long ago. I look through it for about an hour including cutting time and move on. It seems that when I am done cutting one up I have about 5 or 6 pages of stuff that I have an intrest in or think is kind of neat and the rest is recycling. It would just take up too much space to keep a "library" of stuff I'll never look at.
Brian,
Here here. I like my (our) system, and since this is a tips and tricks (plus the wife likes it) I'll continue. Mine do hang around for more than an hour. Plus, I'm not a magazine resaler (is that a word?). Nothing fancy on this end, trust me. I don't mind the "flack", it just means that people actually use this site. The Sysop will be happy:). I usually don't follow the "exact" plans, but they do get me thinking. Like a pony engine on a Farmall, you know what I mean.... That is one area I lack, creativity. The bride has said for years that I'm too symmetrical. So now I'm pushing that paradigm and becoming more creative. I will soon introduce copper inlayed into my work.
I'll keep clipping. When the wife is happy I'm happy, heheheheJoe

"When the wife is happy I'm happy, hehehehe"That's why I try to do the clipping and file them the same day they come in. I have a bad habit of keeping things around. It's the reason for the "system" in the first place. She got me a file cabinet and a box of manilla files. My overflowing pile of magazines became half a drawer of file folders. We sound alot alike. All I need is the inspiration, I don't need measured drawings. Be sure to post some pics of the copper inlay. I am playing with some solid-surface inlay and relief carving in some upcoming furniture projects. I'm trying to break out of my mold a bit.Brian
Great! Now all you need is to convince the Mags. to separate the articles on different pages so they separate!
WG,
I have ran into that problem, too. I just repro the page that is double sided and "Uff Da", done. I mounted some thin gauge steel on the front of my shop cabinets (hey, here is another tip) and placed magnets on them to hold cutting lists, plans, honey do lists, ect. Works great, keeps the plans at eye level and off the bench. Since my wall mounted cabinet span about twevle feet. I can hang up large plans and work without problems.
Enjoy,Joe

Uff Da?? Are you Swedish?
I always thougt Uff Da and Fi Da were Norwegian.
Definitions for you non-Scandinavians (poor souls!)
Uff Da is used when you drop your chewing gum in the chicken coop.
Fi Da is when you put it back in your mouth.
Uff Da and Fi Duh
Well, you know Norway was a part of Sweden at different times for many years as it also was owned by Denmark at different times. And Finland was conquered by Sweden for many years. My wife comes from Swedish Finn ancestry. My name "Lundberg" has to fall in the basket of "Dumb Swedes." I think the terms belong to the whole of the Scandinavians.
The gum thing in the chicken coop-- Is the Fi Da term when you put it in you mouth and found out it was your gum or found out it was not your gum?
Sounds like a Swedish question.
I thought I was the only one. I have a similar system and cut mags up put stuff I might use in files and toss the rest. It is amazing how little you keep out of a stack of mags. They sure do have a lot of advertising in them.
I have my mags in D ring binders and every few months, I go thru them and enter info into a word document with info on the article/review/project.. and the magazine and issue number.
Each binder is labeled on the spine with Magazine and issue numbers in binder.
Binders are on shelves in garage/shop over the chest freezer.
I bought a bunch of plastic filing crates and file folders at Staples one day. Each crate is labeled with one brand of magazine and I place one years worth of issues into a folder. Then I mark the folder with that year. Along with that, I save all the articles onto an Excel spreadsheet on my computer with the project name, magazine name and issue. When I have something I want to build, I "Find" it in Excel and then go to that crate to pull out that issue. Works well.

I bought "plastic report holders." Just photo copy plans u want to keep, put in folder and put folder in notebook. U can take a step further and make an index. Why keep the whole magazine if u don't want it. Just keep the plans.
