Okay, here it is, tool cabinet by committee. I can’t thank you Knotheads for all your advice. On September 3 I posted a question about 1/2″ plywood shelves in a Garage Storage Cabinet that my father and I were making for his garage. You provided a good bit of valuable advice and feedback. If you follow that thread (37476.1), you can see the design has come a long way since then.
Quick summary:
– Two cabinets–top and bottom–of equal dimension.
– Basic box frame based loosely on Jan Zoltowski’s “Quick-to-Make Tool Cabinet” except butt jointed, rather than finger jointed. Brad nailed and glued with Titebond II (the blue stuff), with screws added to reinforce the top-to-side and bottom-to-side joints. (Dropped the idea of biscuits primarily due to cost.)
– Mounted on casters, to allow the free flow of air below.
– The 2″ deep frame on the top cabinet door, and the inner door are meant to accommodate hangers for tools. We’ll work on those once we get the cabinet(s) to my dad’s house.
– Oak guides for the upper cabinet trays.
– 3/4″ ply shelves, no edging, screwed to cleats that were screwed to the sides and back.
– Replaced the bottom shelves with 3 drawers mounted on 100 lb. heavy duty full extension guides. (My first adventure into drawer making.)
You can see a great deal about the design from the pics. If you have any questions, I’ll be glad to answer.
Special thanks to: Glaucon, BG, oldusty, PaulMassachusetts, saschafer, simeonzera, and Jigs-n-fixtures for your help.

Your work is excellent!
Danny..Thats a jim-dandy cabinet to be sure. And you also have the option to add 6 or 7" pull outs on either side to accommodate hand saws, 4' straight edges, etc-ie the stuff that wouldn't fit in the drawers. And if you care to, you can add a smaller cabinet up top to hold different sheet sandpaper stock. On the front of one my cases, built similarly, I have my layout tools held on the face with little blocks purpose made to hold various devices-squares, smaller rules, calipers etc. But it's gotta be populated in the body to have the weight required to keep it in balance....If all the weight is in the front door, you could be lookin at a little tippitational catastrophe. Been there and done that. Looks good to me.Eric
