I have a basement shop, but I find that moisture is getting to all my tools and minute specks of rust are starting to form on my chisels, handplanes, tablesaw top, bandsaw table, etc…, basically anything made of iron or steel. Any suggestions out there as to how to prevent this and keep a smooth clean table top at the same time? I am sure there are all kinds of suggestions so I am open to every one.

I'm too lazy to retype, so I'll just point you to a similar reply I gave a while back.

If you build it - he will come.
Running one or two dehumidifiers will probably solve your rust problem.
Just by chance are your tools close to your washing machine, particularly the bleach for the clothes? Chlorine fumes can and do cause rust to form.

So, that explains why salt causes rust then, doesn't it?

I made the mistake of placing my pool chemicals in the garage and even though the containers were tightly sealed rust formed on all iron surfaces including those in a tool box. The chemicals are now stored in a plastic box adjacent to the pool.

No washing machine, but they are next to my back door and we have been having a harsh winter here, and alot of salt is being tracked in.
You might try silica gel packets, i put them in my tool box drawers, night and day difference. Over in breaktime there is a thread talking about how to re-use it once its soaked up its max amount of moisture. Also, this may sound obviouse but making sure the drainage from the gutter downspoutes is being directed away from the building can make a huge difference RE: moisture coming through the basement walls.______________________________________________

HTC makes a breathable cover to prevent moisture and rust problems. Get their catalog. They do not have a website or plan to get one in the furture.
