Hi,
Anyone have a source for a NICE tool tote? I have a Ruffian canvas bag I like fine but it gets a bit floppy after a while. I’m looking for something similar-canvas, leather or combo.
I need to carry say a smoothing plane, chisel roll, shoulder plane, dovetail saw, measuring and marking devices etc..
Not a Duluth cordura bag….but something nicer. Noi VetoPros either..too heavy.
Thanks,

Build your own! Roy Underhill has plans in one of his books (Woodwright's Apprentice-I think). If you want to buy one like Roy's, look on "The Best Things" site. However, a number of years ago I built one like Roy's--don't think it took me more than a couple of hours at most, and did it true to his plans. If you buy lumber already dimensioned so you don't have to rip, etc., you shave the time some more.
tony-- you are talking about the one with the flared sides, correct?
I have got those plans, often admired that tote--------- but never built it as, I figured, it seemed destined to promote a tangled jumble of tools at the bottom.
also--built several including combinations of several from jim tolpins Tool Box Book.
one warning-------- they function better as a "work station"----actually toting them on a dailey basis is problematic.
Personally-- i am thinking about one of the Veto bags-------- never seen one in person------------ though on-line buddies mention their weight. I don't see how they could weigh nearly as much as a solid wood tote, however.
Happy toting, Stephen
Yes--that's the one I built and it is very similar to what Lee Richmond sells at "The Best Things". I don't find it any worse than most tool boxes/totes or whatever, for if you don't use "tool rolls" for chisels, "socks" for planes and so on, tools always end up in a jumble.
I've used a number of different methods/tool boxes/buckets etc. to carry tools but I like the traditional look of this tote or even the "finish carpenter" tool box/brief case that Underhill al
currently i use a riggers bag with a leather bottom--------- it's got-oh a couple dozen slots sewn around the outside which gives me a specific place for each chisel, screwdriver etc.-some larger outside poched to stuff similar-un-delicate tools like vice grips, pliers cresent wrenches etc.. Large inner compartment for a #5 plane and similarly sized items------- but most often used stuff is easily accessible in the outside slots-without having to unroll a tool roll everytime i want a 3/4" chisel.

I use this for finish carpentry and cabinetry work; it's handy since I'm often dealing with things that require a pair of pliers or a screwdriver as much as a chisel or saw. Lots of pockets for holdinf these, as well as bevel gauges, dental picks, nail sets, nail pullers....
Got mine at HD. My only complaint is it gets heavy because I keep putting more and more in it. Needs to have a helium balloon attachment.
yes, hd has a number of those type bags. i use several at work. one has my tools and the other has my cordless drill and all the accessories. i like the ones with the rubber bottoms because they will stay on seat etc. and not slip off.
I guess I still find these the best...http://www.ruffianspecialties.com/CANVASPRODPG6.HTMLIt's the small photo in upper right hand corner. They commonly available tool rolls but seems to me I had to special order one of the bags a few years back.Thanks,Bro.Luke
ah ok. i really need a shoulder strap on mine. not to mention more space. they both are a departure from metal which is nice.
I lust after the carpenter's version of the plumber's tote shown here: http://www.awpconstructiongear.com/product_list.asp?cat=jobsite_organizers
But in the meantime, I've made one from reclaimed lumber.
