I know I’ve seen drawer slides that mount under a top but so far my searches of the big box stores and Rockler haven’t found any. How do you suspend drawer slides from a solid top?

Use drilled angle from home depot or hardware stores. You need to work out some way of fastening the angle to the top so that the top wood can move, unless your top is MDF.
Actually, that depends on how the bench top is constructed and with what. Typically, a bench top is constructed as a lamination with the faces of the boards oriented vertically and glued (or otherwise joined) together (so that the surface of the bench top is edge grain and not face grain). In such a situation the top will act more like a QS slab with most of the movement occuring in the thickness of the slab and not in the width. To be on the safe side, one could elongate the holes in the angle iron to allow the top to move the little amount it will in that particular direction.
Question: If you have dog holes drilled in your bench top, why would you want to mount drawers underneath? Seems to me that you will forever be cleaning dust and wood shavings out of your drawers.

Hi Mach70 ,
I call them " add a drawers" or retro fit hanging drawers and one way is to build a structure with 2 sides and a thin top . Of course build the drawer box to fit the opening of the structure then you can screw or fasten , up through the lid into the underside of the top .
There are also drawer slides made that are designed to attach up to the bottom of a countertop application , but imo you would be limited to the several that are available , where as the other way you can use any slide you want .
good luck dusty

This is just a 2X4 & plywood basement workbench. Rebuilding one that came with the house and has a plank top.Dusty,
Good tip. I had decided to add dividers connecting the front & rear aprons in order to mount standard slides but I think I'll make the drawer "insert" (4 in a row) separate with a scrapwood top & bottom to keep it all square during mounting.Edited 12/30/2006 5:48 pm ET by Mach70

I think that you are looking for pencil drawer slides, if i understood your email correctly. They are readily available at Rocklers. Another possibility would be to use those premade sheetmetal "add a drawers" that can be ordered from Lee Valley. Since you have to make a box for these they would be fairly protected from most of the sawdust generated on a workbench. Hope that this helps.
