Top three woodworking tools of all time?
What is ya’ll’s opinion on the top three woodworking tools/inventions of all time?
I select tools/inventions that have endured the ages and still remain as staples in todays workshops, many times without much modification from original designs. I would choose the following:
Knife(plane, chisel, jointers, planers)
Clamp(I would challenge you to make a project without some sort of clamping device)
Saw(the most commonly used tool then and now)
This could be a very interesting discussion.

Going back to physics, I think you've listed two of the simple tools, the wedge and the lever. The knife and saw are both wedges and the clamp is a lever (I think). But all tools in one way or another come from the simple tools.
Brawn, Brains and Stamina.... Any bets.. !!! Whoops almost forgot the one most essential tool... Patience.....

Jeff,
Teenagers and telemarketers were invented in hell, the telephone is just an innocent by stander. I haven't decided yet about call waiting.

Leather handled Estwing hammer (just love the way it looks).
I grew up with one of those. My dad never wanted to throw it out, except it lost one of the leather donuts on the handle. Man did that pinch. From that time on nobody used it. If you can find it it is yours.

The top three tools?
"Men have become the tools of their tools" wrote Henry David Thoreau.
Some say that a tool is the extension of the mind, I say that the hand is the extension of the mind, and a tool is the extension of the hand.
If you can't see it in your mind, you can't do it. The best tool is a good idea. the mind can find a way. Steel is a useful tool for making a variety of blades, to cut, shape and scrape.
A workbench to hold the workpiece is very important.
Admiring eyes of someone who likes to watch the process of making something wonderful with wood is a great motivator.
For me it is Band saw, table saw and jointer/planer.
Or is it wood chisel, hand plane and marking tools?
The most satisfying tools are the ones you make yourself.
Sorry I did not answer, exactly, but maybe offered some other things to think about in the world of making things of wood.

WORST new tool
CELL PHONE!!!!!makinsawdust
Ed,
You'll get no argument from me on that one; those things drive me nuts. Last summer I went into an antique shop in Chicago where they had a large sign reading "No cellular phones allowed." I conveyed my deepest appreciation to the owner.

...until you are sitting at the side of the road with car trouble late at night, then they are the best thing in the world to have.
or when your kids need to reach you and you aren't at home, or when you need to do business while traveling, or a thousand other reasons.
I think you are confusing the device and etiquette.
Don't know if you know this, but you can buy any cell phone and have it activated for "the service fee" only and have no concurrent contract or connections. All this will give you is access to emergency numbers and in some areas, collect calls. Bought a mobil phone for my parents for this reason. The mobil phone is 3 watts, much more power then a cell phone, and it gives them access to help in case of an emergency. They're retired seniors who spend a lot of time traveling.

I concur with the history of technology guys who put the work bench right up near the top of the greatest tool inventions.

Jeff,
I don't drive at night - to hard to see.
No kids - that's why I can afford tools and machinery.
Don't do business travel, and when I do travel it's to get away from everything.
Don't really like any kind of telephone.
