I just completed a kitchen work table of QSWO with General Finish Arm R Seal. It looks fine, but my question is: Do I need something on the top for more protection since it is a work table and will get some minor abuse, or is the Arm R Seal enough? I have 5 thin (wipe) coats on now.
Thanks,

I discussed this with GF Tech Service
a few months ago, as I was finishing a very large cherry sideboard for our church library. I was concerned because the top would be used for coffee hours, pot luck suppers etc. The tech email person (she traavels and demos GF all over US) said that the Arm-r-seal was very durable as long as you put on 5 coats.
Why don't you get their opinion on your specific application. They respond quickly and are very practical. BTW I have used GF oil finishes for abot 50 years and my father before me for at least another 20!

You can increase protection, mostly from liquids, by adding a few more coats. But, there isn't any top coat that you could add that would substantially increase protection over that.

Thanks to both...I contacted General Finishes and they agreed that 4-5 coats is plenty and nothing more is needed.

Arm R Seal is a polyurethane varnish thinned for easier application. Because it is thinned I would suggest at least 4-5 coats to achieve good protection. Be sure to let the finish fully cure for 3-4 weeks before subjecting it to heavy use or hot or cold items.
