I want to make an airplane for my grandchildren to sit in – like they are the Red Barron flying ace of Snoopy style. I was thinking of something they could just sit in or maybe push around with their feet.
Anyone know of a plan ? where I might begin to look? the grandchildren are 5 1/2 down to one.
thanks

Thanks so much - I checked those web sites and didn't find something I was looking for. I think it might be more like a hobby horse but in the form of an airplane. any ideas? thanks

I remember seeing a scan of an old shopsmith project which was of an airplane for children to sit on. Don't remember if it was a rocker or one to be pushed with feet. I looked for the site, but can't seem to find it. However, I believe I have plan at work. If it's not too late, I'll let you know Monday.

Joe,
The one I saw was actually in the catalog not on the web sight. you might want to order a catalog and checkit out. If you find what your looking for great if not you get the pleasure of knowing that you will start getting plenty of junk mail. ha ha ha

Hi Joe here is a small version of something that could be upscaled for a wee lad to sit on.

Joe,
Couldn't find a model airplane, but maybe you can if you've got the time to browse.

I was able to stop by the shop tonite afterall. The first company I found on the web but can't find it now. This is the straddle type and is very nice and not to hard to make. Small Fry Aircraft Co. --861 N Bush St ---Ukiah , Calif---95482
The next one has a bunch of different style that are great machines but much more complicated and more money to make. Aviation Products Inc.--PO Box 8303--Cedar Rapids, IA --52408

You might check if your local library has one of the wooden toy books by Richard E. Blizzard. The two I'm thinking of are Making Wooden Toys and Blizzard's Wonderful Wooden Toys. One of these books contains a timber bi-plane which I made for the two year old son of a friend some years ago. From memory it was constructed from 3/4 in pine, had a saddle seat, 4 in wheels mounted under the lower wings, and a 3 in caster under the tail plane. Total construction time was in the order of 2-3 hours, excluding painting but the finished product looked very realistic. It'll be Sunday before I can access my copy of the book, but if you want I can look up the details and post again.

Ian - I'll try the library - thanks very much - one of the problems I am questioning myself on is a 5 yr. old grabndson - maybe it's too small a deal for him. but the others are 3 and two.

Joe,
Go to http://www.woodcraftplans.com
and click on the "Rocking Horse" category.
They have a nice riding airplane rocker.
If it ain't American --- it's junk!
Joe
I've retrieved my copy of the book I was refering to it's More of Blizzard's Wooden Toys. The plane is designed for indoor or outdoor use, is about 22" long, has a wingspan of 20" so will fit through most doorways. It is made from 3/4in plank. See photo.

Ian -
thank you so much - it gives me a great set of ideas - my grandsons will be pleased!

Hi Joe:
I have looked everywhere for that plan and I still cannot find it. I believe it was a very old Shopsmith Hands-On project. You may want to try an email at
http://www.shopsmithhandson.com
and see if they will provide it. I'll continue to look for it on my computers. Sorry.
