Hello,
I wanted to see if anyone had any ideas for woodworking projects someone could do while away on vacation. I dream all day of having more time in the woodshop, but as I look ahead to some upcoming time off, we will be out of town and away from the shop. We will be traveling by car and enjoying some time at a small rental home, so I could squeeze a few things into the car and work outside on a driveway or deck. We have a couple young kids (8 & 5) so bonus points if you have ideas that kids could enjoy as well.
Many thanks,
David

Carving.
Carving spoons & walking sticks with found in the woods materials is easiest, provided you can trust the kids with knives.
These are fun, and you can get into them with a simple tool kit:

In days of yore, folks would set in their rockin' chairs and whittle. Young'uns these days call it Green Woodworking.
Bring some roughed out blanks for spoons and carve those. You might find some local wood where you are staying as well.
Amazing the amount of tools you can fit in something like a shoulder box. I started my kids out with coping saws, one went on to build satellites. 5 year olds and edge tools maybe not a great idea. Bring a bunch of bandaides.
There is a homeless guy in my town living out of a van. He's been dragging driftwood up from the beach and building benches and stools. Has himself a little furniture store there by the side of the road.. He's pretty prolific and Im thinking I ought to buy something. I have a spare number 5 that I've thought about handing off to him, I think it would help.
You could send the kids into the woods with a chain saw. You know, " Time to grow up kids!"
Chainsaw. We didn't get no chainsaws when we were kids. Give em a misery whip. A rusty one.
Kumiko panels. The kids can help cut them to size, you can do the chisel work, and the kids can assemble.

Chip carving - Just need one knife and some basswood (ok, a pencil, ruler, and compass too)
Models of cars made of wood with their own hands. Toy cars, things are certainly interesting. And believe me to make a car from wood with his own hands doing, too, interesting and very fascinating. If you have ever been to the theater, you've probably noticed that the light turns off slowly before the performance begins, that is, not immediately, but smoothly. Tic-tac-toe out of wood My teenage daughter and I have been into board games since long before she went to school. One of our favorite games is tic-tac-toe. Its rules are simple and straightforward, but it takes focus and strategy to win. My daughter loves it when she manages to beat me with luck and distractions.
