Hi, I’m planning to make a trestle dining room table with 18″ expandable leaves on each end. The catalogs I’ve seen feature table slides that pull out so that one can add separate leaves in the space that’s provided. I would like the leaves to pull out from under the table and then adjust upward to the level of the table. I know that this is possible because I’ve seen it in a furniture store. (I know that it’s necessary to do it this way because my wife doesn’t want to store the extra leaves in the closet.) I just don’t understand how this works and don’t know where I could buy table slides that store the leaves under the table until I want to extend the table size. As usual I truly appreciate any advice (or almost any advice) that I can get from the good people on the other end of the line. Thanks. (signed) Shalom

Shalom,
Last time this came up Sgian gave some pointers on this method...very popular in the 40's-50's...unfortunately, the soccer thingie is on over there so who knows...
Anyhow, no advice on the specifics from me however, In Ernest Joyce's Encyclopedia of Furniture Making around pg. 390 specific details are provided. There are probably other books that address this also.
My kitchen table (I bought it, didn't make it) stores its leaves on simple brackets attached to the table's legs, sitting turned 90° from their in-use orientation. You slide the table top apart, slip the leaf (leaves) from the bracket-shelf, and set it in place, then close the top again, capturing the leaf (leaves).
Not quite as cool as leaves the pop up directly into place, but markedly less complex, I guess. Works for us -- no leaves in the closet!
