All,
I ordered the Triton 3 1/4 router for my router table setup last week and it should be coming in this week. What’s bothering me is the price I paid….$214 Woodcraft. I’ve noticed that the same router, or at least what appears to be the same router, cost a lot more a couple of years ago. Did they change the router? delete/modify features? some bad feedback on design? I can’t seem to find any comparative information out there is cyberspace. Anyone have any thoughts or info?

The FWW article reviewing routers for router tables (the Triton was the top rated model both Best Overall and Best Value, by the way) shows a street price of $200, so your $214 seems reasonable, given the Woodcraft source.
I am shoping for a dedicated router for a Leigh FMT -- a smooth plunger, not too top heavy, and not too heavy overall are what works for me on the FMT. Although bit heavier than the Bosch 1617 I am using now, the Triton sounds like a possibility. ... Tried to look at one at the local Woodcraft that has them for 215, but the box was sealed and they did not want to open it.
You are a "hot prospect", they don't have a display model, and they don't want to open the box? Back to retailing 101 for these guys. By opening the box specially for a customer, the odds of purchase increase dramatically, and even if the customer doesn't buy, they will sell a lot more if they have a model on display. I hope this wasn't the franchise owner, since if that's how he thinks, his investment is at risk.
I was a hot propsect, but they did not have a display model and since I could not physically hold one, I just moved on. It was not the store manager, but this particular store does not have the greatest customer service. Nothing against Woodcraft, just sometimes this store does things that I shake my head at. If I had insisted, I am sure they would have opened it, but ....
Good grief !! Wouldn't open the box, thats sad. I work at a woodworking store, and would have gladly opened it up for you. And I really like the Tritons features.Work Safe, Count to 10 when your done for the day !!

Steve,
The Triton model that FWW reviewed is the 2 1/2 hp...or 13 amps. mine is the 3 1/4 at 15 amps. Interestingly, the 2 1/2 is $210 with lots of freebies( winding handle, bushings, etc.)...the 3 1/4 is $214 without the freebies.
I have the 3 1/4 model you describe, and I paid over $300 for it in 2002 or 2003. Is the router you ordered the same one that was reviewed in FWW in the brand new issue? If so, it's different-the one reviewed is a 2 1/2 hp. And though it may be a lower HP rating, it seems as though they've worked out some of the kinks from that earlier model, so I think you are getting a better one than I have.
Double check to make sure you have the HP rating correct. I think you're getting the 2 1/2 HP. If it is the 3 1/4, you are getting a bargain.
Kinks aside, I really like this router for table use.
Maybe someday I'll know a little something.
JJV,
Exactly, bargains scare me..and Woodcraft is not known for bargains. I am getting the 3 1/4 however, I don't know if it's the same as yours. There are no model numbers to campare...they only have one 3 1/4 model..
It may just be a bargain...and Woodcraft is selling it for about $50 bucks less than the competition....strange!
Whatever you are paying there is cheap compared to our prices, although we benefit from 240 volts. The 2 1/2 hp is about £157 or $300ish and we in addition have to pay 17 1/2% value added tax ( Just an European rip-off ) before we can get our grubby mits on it.
Mufti,
I did wonder if the American verses Aussie dollar relationship had changed and maybe that was the reason for the drop in price?
BG,
A quick check at Amazon and the 3 1/2 hp Triton is $269 with no shipping. Sounds like a better deal to me. But free shipping is quoted as taking a little longer, but I buy stuff from them and I have never experienced any unacceptable delays with free shipping.
