I was reading about how clear cutting of Venezualen forests is threatening the coffee crops that are planted there. What a conundrum for the woodworker! I never work without a cup o’ joe at hand. What’s a guy to do?

I never work without a cup o' joe at hand. Gee they get on my case about my JACK.. Hell, I just sip a BIG glass throughout the day..

Environmentalists are currently pushing the idea of shade-grown coffee as preferable to clear cutting followed by open field growing. The purveyors of this coffee claim that it is of better quality. It does have the advantage that more tropical hardwoods can still be grown for us woodworkers & we can have our brew also. I haven't tried the shade-grown stuff as my digestive system revolted against coffee recently. The prices I have seen far exceed the Maxwell House stuff that I liked. The economics could change with time or due to political activity south of the border.

I've been buying green beans imported from all over the world. It is a bit of a hassle getting set up but once done, green beans are roughly $4-5 @ pound.I roast with a Westbend Poppery II. If you'd like more information go to http://www.sweetmarias.com for everything you'd ever want to know about home roasting. My favorite coffees come from Java, El Salvador, Kenya, Ethiopia, Mexico and recently, India. In some of these countries, coffee production is the main source of income.BTW, coffee originated in Ethiopia.
