My project involves spray painting a kitchen island. I am using a black latex enamel (Ben Moore Regal Aquaglo). I’m spraying with a Wagner 2900 HVLP system. Always in the past after thinning the paint and fiddling with the adjustments, I’ve been able to get fairly smooth results. Not this time. The paint is coming out bumpy and the color is uneven. In random places some of the paint kind of pools (even on the vertical surfaces) and has a cloudy cast to it. At this point multiple coats are on as I have had to aggressively sand in between the coats. I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has had a lot of experience spraying latex paint with an HVLP sprayer concerning the two problems of bumpy paint and uneven color. Thanks.
P.S. I don’t suspect environmental conditions to be the problem. All of that has been within an acceptable range.

I just finished spraying three rooms worth of trim, wainscaoting and some built-ins with Benjamin Moore Satin Impervo and did not encounter any of the problems you mention. I did have to sand between coats because the surface was a bit rough but I blame that on the dusty environment. Otherwise everything went very well. I was spraying Timid White - perhaps dark colors are more difficult. I used a Walcom HVLP conversion gun and thinned the paint about 7% with tap water. This was the first time I have sprayed paint through the gun. Sorry I can not offer any suggestions for your specific problems.

Sounds like you've been busy. I love the look of wainscoating in a room. I've sprayed with the Impervo before and was also pleased with the results. Maybe the BM semi-gloss is a little trickier. Black paint is definitely hard to work with.
Thanks for sharing your comments, Kalena
Have you used FloeTrol? It evens out the paint and if it's bumpy, it sounds like you may be too far away or the paint is cold.
Is this a new can of paint or is it something you had? Could have been contaminated at the paint store, too.
The paint was new. I really don't think it was contaminated. Yes, I added Floetrol. The bumpy (orange peel) reaction is easier too trouble shoot, but I'm stumped on the uneven color/cloudy reaction. The uneven color is random, almost pooling in some areas. Any ideas on the cause of that? Thanks for your interest. Kalena
Have you used this paint before? Perhaps it is not compatable with flotrol. Your description sounds like what happens when a gun is used for oil finish then cleaned and used for water base. Have you sprayed or cleaned the gun with a oil based product? I dont mean to insult you but did you use Flotrol or Penetrol?
Pardon my spelling,
Mike
Make sure that your next project is beyond your skill and requires tools you don't have. You won't regret it.
I've sprayed kitchen cabinets using the Ben Moore Impervo (Satin) with very nice results, but this was the first time I've tried to spray the BM Regal Aquaglo (Sem-gloss). They are both 100% latex enamel paints from the same company. Yes, Floetrol can be added to this paint. I prefer to work with wate-base products, and therefore have never sprayed oil-base through my gun. I'm still stumped on why the black color came out uneven/splotchy. Appreciate the input, Kalena
