I am moving forward in my quest to build a cabinet. Now I am building a small box to develop dovetails, rail and stile door, and my finish.
Regarding the finish. I am using Transtint liquid dyes in a water base on maple. I am trying to match some existing kitchen cabinets that were done in ‘fruitwood’ according to the installer.
I used Transtint Dark Vintage Maple about 1/32 after sealing with a 1lb cut of dewaxed flakes. Matches pretty good, a little too golden. Then applied a couple of coats of Arm-R-Seal from Woodcraft. Now that definitely brought out too much of a golden tone. So, I need to tone down the golden color and get it back to a more brown color.
So what’s the best tint to counter that gold? Would it be a reddish brown? I know it should be a complimentary color to tone out the yellow but don’t have the experience to judge it. It needs to tone it down enough that I actually go ‘past’ my real color to account for the Arm-R-Seal.
Thank goodness the dovetails were easier! Love my Keller jig, good beginner stuff.

So in some post thinking, maybe it's blue-violet? I shoulda paid more attention in high school but that was a long time ago.
I visited Woodcraft last night. They suggested moving to a waterbased topcoat to avoid the golden shades brought in by Arm-R-Seal.
He was afraid that over doing the dye to the other side would only darken the piece past the desired amount. Still bought some yellow, red, blue Transtint to play but will now try spraying my topcoat. I already have some HVLP equip from painting computer cases so no expense to try (a rare treat).
I do like these dyes though. Bought Jeff Jewet's book on finishing to learn more about them. Seem very controllable and would make prefinishing pretty easy.
Unfortunately I am not the right person to ask. I never dye or stain my work and do not have much experience in this matter. Hopefully others in the Form can help you out.

Thanks for responding. I will try over in the Finishing forum. I didn't see others in the "Ask the experts" to try.
