I have an old kitchen table that I was refinishing, and I thought that I was applying a true tung oil finish (minwax tung oil finish) to it. After I applied the first coat and was doing some further research (why I would do this after I applied a coat of finish rather than before is a good question…) I realized that I didn’t apply a tung oil finish at all, but rather a mixture of varnish and linseed oil.
So – what should I do now? This is a kitchen table that gets a lot of use. Should I continue with the Minwax Tung Oil Finish? Should I strip it and sand it to remove and start over with something else (if so – suggestions??)?
My two concerns are first – safety and second – durability.
Thanks in advance for the help!!

Minwax Tung Oil Finish is an oil/varnish finish consisting of linseed oil, resin (varnish) and mineral spirits. The only "tung oil" in the product is in the name. There is little resin or varnish in it but even that little bit makes it a much superior protective finish than pure tung oil. Pure tung oil will not protect the surface from water, chemical cleaners or abrasion. Adding varnish will greatly improve the finish in all ways and still give you the look-and-feel of the in-the-wood finish
Even better is to make your own oil/varnish mixture. Mix equal parts of boiled linseed oil, your favorite varnish or poly varnish and mineral spirits. Apply it following the directions for the Minwax Tung Oil Finish. You will have an even more durable and protective finish.
