Pure tung oil has a short term life when used on exterior surfaces. Us boaters know that it must be renewed every 3-6 months to maintain any appearance or protection.
The best way to preserve outdoor furniture is to either put it out of the sun and rain when not it use or to buy/make UV blocking covers that can be put over the furniture. No clear finish lasts more than a year or two when exposed to the UV in sunlight.
Another question on outdoor furniture finish
I was afraid tung oil wouldn't last. How about spar varnish on outdoor furniture? One source told me to wait a year for treated wood to dry before application. Is this right -- andis the result worth the wait?
