My priest (Episcopalian) of over 23 years is retiring and I want to turn a chalice as a retirement gift. I have over 30 years of WW as a hobbyist but very little experience with turning. I plan to get a mentor thru the local WT club. My question is what exotic wood would make the best cup? What wood could be used for liquids?

You can drink out of most woods. Leaving liquid in a wooden cup for more than a few minutes makes this more problematic.
If I were turning this I would use Bethlehem olive wood. It's beautiful, turns amazing, and even smells great. It's perfect for you, but not cheap in the size you need. I'd practice on maple or cherry first.
Suggest a bit more research. If this chalice is to be used for religious celebration some religions require the chalice may not be made of porous material or if it is wood it must be lined with gold, silver or ceramic. Others limit the wood choice to olive.
Thanks sir. But this will just be a display gift and I'll probably make a nice display case for it also.
Reproduce the one from Indiana Jones.
Ummm... I don't think those headhunters were Episcopalian.
No, the one with the holy grail, and the ancient crusader. Headhunters would have used a nice gourd.
I've ordered olive wood from Bethlehem. Cost of shipping is more than the wood which doesn't surprise me. 5-15 day shipping $50. I had to order 4 blanks of 2.5 X 2.5 X 4 each.
Don't know yet what glue to use to put them all together for turning and what contrasting wood to use for the stem and base. Suggestions welcome.
I think that there is a better gift, for example, an expedition
At first I thought you were talking about a vehicle
