Hello, 1st post …. I own a nice WL1200 Ridgid wood lathe, all is tight and tools Sharp, I have no problem with the tuning of the base and the beginning of the outside, then I turn it round and it is time to start the inside (hard wood – well seasoned Cherry), this is where I run into serious trouble, although my gouge(s) are Sharp and I am tuning at what I think is a good speed, the gouge – Catches -, and this is way, way wrong and I must figure out what I am doing wrong or I cannot continue, can someone Please help me ???? Thank you, Guss Morey

Hollow turning
You are NOT using a roughing gouge and you begin your cuts with the bevel rubbing......how are presenting the cutting edge to the wood?........Is the tool handle horizontal?.....Check out David Ellsworth's book as a reference source....look for demos on You Tube
Catches
On an inside cut you want to have the tool rest a little below center providing your not cutting end grain.
It may be much easier to work with a scraper then a gouge if you're new to this

Richard Raffan has an excellent video/book on turning lidded boxes, which sounds like what you are trying. There are also videos on line at http://www.woodturnersresource.com forum. End requires different spindle gouge use than the sides.
