I am turning a bell Christmas tree ornament out of maple. Need suggestions for hollowing out the bell. Turning tool will catch and the wood starts to come out of the chuck jaws.

Start it with a series of stepped cuts with forstner bits in a jacobs chuck. Once it's opened up the steps should clean up fairly easily. Make a jam chuck to shape the outside.
There is a tool that has a sharp ring on the end called a hook and it is used for end grain turning, I never used it but instead, I put a fostner bit in the tail piece and drill as large as possible, then I use scrapers to thin out the walls.
Oneway termite tool is one of the ring tools made for this purpose.
Thank you. Your suggestions worked great. I first turned the outside of the bell, then drilled out the center starting with my smallest bits and working my way up to the largest forstner bit. I had to watch the diameter of the bell and drilled each hole shallower to account for the shape of the bell. I then smoothed out the inside using my turning tools.
Awesome.
