Need to turn 4 quarter colums. I’ve read about gluing up the four sections with newspaper so you can easily split the turned posts apart. Posts will be 2 and 1/8″ each, so the final blank will be 4 and 1/4″ by about 30″. Don’t really want to get his in the head if it splits apart while turning. Anyone ever done this before? I’ll knock off the edges before turning, and keep the speed low…Thanks Jimmy

I've never tried newspaper, I use brown shopping bags. Never had one come apart on the lathe and I spin them up pretty good.

I'll give it a shot...do they split apart easily?
It's a little mallet and chisel work but not too bad, I'd rather it be a little work than have one come apart on the lathe. It leaves half the thicknes of the paper on each piece, I would worry about not being able to get them apart with something as thin as newsprint.------------------------------------

jimmy,it is quite easy- use ordinary news paper-I am assuming it is not the very thin shiney type. Not too much glue. If you are unsure as to the strength you can just tape the ends with masking tape once they are round, then turn it off at the finish.
Jimmy,
Have done this many times, with brown paper or newspaper. No worries about splitting, unless you pound the drive center's spurs into the glueline. Thicker the paper, easier it is to split the line later when separating.

thanks to all. Turned the colums yesterday and all went well. (used brown craft paper and they split apart cleanly) Jimmy.
