What are you doing wrong?
Probably nothing. The nature of the waste depends on the type of cut being made and the orientation of the grain in relation to the cut. Sharp tools play a role, too, of course.
Green wood
Ditto Ralph. But green wood is a lot of fun ! It is easy to get ribbons shooting over my shoulder with green wood.
But riding the bevel and making shearing cuts is necessary to get the ribbons. Scraping just won't get them.
