the panel (that I spent hours making) that I glued into the rail of a cabinet does not fit tightly and the glue has leaked out. In an effort to clean it up I have made a pretty good mess of the space between panel and rail. So, my question is – would you leave it and hope no one inspects the piece too carefully – or would you fill the gap. I am inclined to fill the gap (if for no other reason than to learn another “trick”) – but how?

need a pic to make any kind of answer.
I know this doesn't anwer your question but why did you glue the panel in, in the first place ? How can your panel expand and contract if it's glued ?
It looks like your gap is the very least of your problems.
C.
You need to bin it and start over.
