Im building a Tansu cabinet from Mike Peckovich’s book. Things are coming along slowly but surely. The (instructions) state that the runners run perpendicular to the grain of the case and you need to accomodate for wood movement. He says “I glued the front portion to the case side and screwed it to the case at the back through a slotted hole”
I cant figure out where to screw it to the back? Does he mean the case back? Certainly wouldnt mean the side. I dont get it??
The Domino will be glued and I made a grove to fit the runner snugly?? Any help here would be apprecite

I've seen this suggestion and have assumed that the slotted hole is in
the runner at the back end. A screw through the center of the slot
and into the side panel is what I think is the idea. The side panel will
expand and contract with the seasons while the runner won't. Should
work fine.

Thanks, so if I'm understanding you, the head of the screw sits in the slotted runner just to support it?
Yes.
The objective is to allow the case side to expand and contract and the runner just stays in position.
The front of the case will stay aligned year round as it’s glued there but the back edges of the case will change width.
If the runner was firmly fixed at both the front and back edges of the case side then eventually the case side will split once it expands or contracts.
Ideally don’t make the stretcher extend all the way to the back panel of the case. Leave the stretcher short so as the sides of the case contract the case back panel and end of the stretcher don’t collide.
I’ve not seen the plans so maybe that’s accounted for already.
Mike
thanks!
Here's a photo of a side-hung drawer runner I installed just this morning that I think supports what mikefm says. I (tightly) screwed, not glued, the front while the rear slotted screw is tight enough to support but loose enough to move. The runner also sits unglued in a 1/32" dado to for accuracy and some stability.
That's awesome. Exactly what I was looking for thanks
