I’m scratching away at a design for a China Hutch to display my wife’s Wedgwood China (obsolete pattern, belonged to her grandmother). The plan so far calls for base cabinets to support display cabinets that will put the peak of the top at about 79 inches above the floor My first working theory is to use surface mounted xenon puck lights (http://www.pegasusassociates.com/XenonPuckLights.jsp or similar). I’m looking for anyone out there that might have experience using these, or something similar that was particularly good or bad. Any guidance in the collective wisdom? I believe the first step is getting the hardware before cutting the wood, and making sure I understand how the mounting is supposed to work. Any other recommendations?

Warning, I helped install some of the puck lights under a display cabinet. Don't let them being 12 volt and 20 watt fool you. Those little babys get really hot, my partner put a lit one face down on the burber carpet and the carpet melted. Even with the recommended spacing between the puck and the wood surface it was mounted to got too hot for my liking. We swapped out the 20Watt bulbs for the 10Watt bulbs. If I were doing it for myself I would go for a low profile linkable fluorescent system. One house fire was enough to make me error on the safe side.

I've done a couple of projects with rope lighting and really like the look. No bright "spots" - just a soft glow around the cabinet. Customers seem to really love the look.
It's hard to see in this picture (my digital camera isn't exactly top of the line) but with the other lights off the wine bottles show up beautifully.
