Hi All,
Just started woodworking, and finished my first project, poker chip holders. Took a 2″X4″ block of oak, and drilled a 1 5/8″ hole for the chips. Problem is that I have an uneven surface on the wood. I’ve tried using wood dough and sanding smooth, but the finish doesn’t stain the wood evenly (Polyshades) and the areas with wood dough stand out like a sore thumb. Any ideas as to a finish which would be durable yet cover the wood dough, or a different type of filler that I can use to smooth out the hole? Thanks very much! This is a great website.

Hi Gecko, I'll try and post a picture tomorrow. Basically what happened was the Fourstner (sp?) bit left little pits in the wood, almost like tearout. So I used the wood dough to fill the pits, and then when it was dry, wrapped sandpaper around a dowel and sanded it smooth. Everything look good at this point, the hole for the chips is nice and smooth, and the wood dough is a pretty good match for the oak. Then I used a foam brush to apply a prestain conditioner, then the Polyshades stain+ploy, and it comes out looking like a leopard print. The oak accepts more of the stain, and gets dark, while the places with the wood dough accept less stain, and are much lighter. Looks terrible, and if I can't find and answer, I'll have to go with paint and cover up that beautiful oak.

First..throw out the 'polyshades'
second..no pre-stain conditioner on oak.
third..wood dough is not meant to be seen as a finished product
fourth..remove all of your first attempt
fifth..re-stain with gel stain
sixth..get a spray can of Deft lacquer
seventh..go out doors and use step six
eighth..read some good books on finishing as per a related thread
ninth..enjoy your final results
tenth..say thank you to the wood gods who smiled down on you.

Sphere,
Okay-Dokay (big smile) Numbers 1,2 4,5,6,7 8,9 & 10, no problem. also can hope the the poker gods smile on me as well when I'm done. As to number 3, any suggestions as to what I could use to fill and smooth the area? I really can't sand everything out, it will end up making the holes too large and chips won't stack evenly. I'd rather not restart with a smaller hole and have to sand to the final size, obviously, lots of holes already drilled and pieces of nice oak beveled and cut...
Jeffrey
line the holes with green felt like a pool table has <G>

eleven...get a better forstner bit. ( mine are freud and leave glass smooth holes in hard wood, sometimes too smooth for glueing)..LOL..

i wonder how it would look if you just painted the hole that the chips go in.

Hi Gecko,
That's my last option. When to Dunn Edwards Paints yesterday in the quest for a gel stain, they didn't carry them, only oil based, wipe on stains. I'll try HD and Lowes today. Thanks for the idea.
Jeffrey
Your best bet to find the stains you want is a woodworking store. If you have Dunn-Edwards you must be on the West coast. Woodcraft and Rockler carry the stains you are looking for. Lowes carries a few. Forget HD.
Thanks Iggy, I'll give Lowes a try.
