Is it just me or does it bother you that some people post questions, others spend time answering (sometimes a lot of time to give detailed answers), and then the original questioner never reads even one post. Should there be some penalty?
Maybe I’m just getting too old and expect too much.

I have noticed, And when an answer is not read I use the option not to post the answer again. And send a new answer directly to the originator of the question.

No it's not just you. Some of these have a simple (but stupid) explanation though. I've noticed quite a few folks seem to think they need to post the same question in multiple sub-forums, then seem to concentrate all their focus on replies to ONE of the posts instead of checking them all. That hardly makes it less annoying, but at least explains some of it.
If you build it he will come.
The way I look at it "other" people will learn from the original question. I know I read a lot and am aways amazed on how many technigues there are to complete a given task. Just shows how much I still need (and want to) learn.

Even a broken clock is correct twice a day...
I get lost here sometimes and can't rember which post is which or where.
I could be wrong, but I think it only registers as read if you use the link you receive in your e-mail notification. I usually just go right to FWW and browse the answers and suspect many others do too.
I'm new here, but frequent many forums of quite a variety of topics (cycling, archery, trumpet, flying, woodworking, shooting, guitar, etc., etc.). Each board or forum uses a completely different format with a completely different look & style. I'm still not "tuned in" to how this forum functions, ie is there a general reply somewhere? I see replies posted "to all", & some replies (probably like this one of mine) that is a reply to someone in particular (although this one is not by design, only because it was the last one in line when I replied). Some people may start a topic & not log back on for a few days for one reason or another (weekend, vacation, etc.), so may not respond in what might seem a reasonable period of time to others.
Thanks for the replys. It is interesting to see the different responses. I guess I will be less concerned about unread replies after seeing the different possible reasons.
81,
Like another of those who replied above, I am happy to post stuff on the chance that people other than the originator of the question might find an interest in my ramblings.
To be really really honest, I like rambling so much it doesn't matter to me a huge lot if no one at all reads my drivel. Like with woodworking, it's the process of construction I like (answering questions in this instance) as much as the finished article or the reaction of those who receive it.
In addition, you often clarify something to yourself, when you answer someone else's question.
Anyway, how do I know you are all really out there and not just a clever Taunton program that has met the Turin Test? :-)

Don,
No program could make up our postings, therefore we are real.
Of course, I have a list of Knots posters who are entirely predictable in their reaction to various stimulii. Therefore I suspect they are Cobol or even Basic!

Of course I am real. If I was a computer, then I would never make a mestake! <grin>
A bad day woodworking is better than a good day working -- yes, I'm retired!
This forum format is very difficult to navigate, second only to Wood Magazine. I continue to wonder why FWW and Wood do not use one of the easy to use forum software packages so popular everywhere else?
It would be nice to visit and be able to display all 'new' posts regardless of which forum they were posted in. There are a lot of other nice features available that are not present with this format.

81,
I am not absolutely certain, but I dont think there is any way to tell if the original poster has read the replies or not. The "unread messages" refers to messages that you yourself have not read. It has nothing to do with whether others have read them or not.

Are you sure? In my admittedly limited experience and lack of knowledge of forums, it refers to the intended recipient of the message.
