Hello,
I will be going from a 6″ General to a yet to be determined 8″ machine. I was wondering if anyone has a Grizzly G0543 8″ spiral cutterhead model. Any comments on it would be welcome.
Thanks
Peter

I have the Grizzly G0543 spiral cutterhead jointer. It is a nice machine that cuts and runs very smooth. It is a joy to have an the 8" capacity and it has worked well on everything that I have thrown at it. I am making some knife storage blocks and after the glue up I run one side that has been glued through the jointer and trim the other side on the table saw. These blocks are made of cherry and maple and surface well on the G0543. No grain tear out and the glue lines would score a steel cutting blade. I have detected no damage to the carbide cutting edges. If I do I will just rotate the cutter, easy to do and I have 4 cutting surfaces on each cutter. Be aware that it requires somewhat more pressure to push a board through a spiral cutter head jointer. I have read that this is because the jointer is almost always cutting not like a 3 or 4 knife cutterhead that has a longer non cutting cycle between cuts.
The build quality is much better than on the 20 year old Powermatic that it replaced, especially the cabinet. The tables are the flattest and best ground of any of the large machine that I own. I have not required any service but Grizzly has been responsive to my questions before purchase. I do not expect to require much service or have problems with Grizzly about service. I did consider the Delta 8" but decided that the Grizzly was a better machine. I am happy with my decision.
Life is what happens to you when you're making other plans .
As a 8" jointer owner, not a grizzley, I find many boards are just a bit too wide still.. :)A real upgrade would be a 10" or their 12"...Alan
Peter,
Just keep in mind that if you buy a Grizzly machine and there is a problem with it, you have to pay for return shipping, and you do not get your original shipping costs refunded. It's a risk.
