Anyone on here know if there are any retail stores catering to woodworking (other than HD/Lowes) in or around upstate NY (Albany/Saratoga area). There was a woodcraft in the area but it recently closed.
Thanks in advance.

AKG,
There is a Woodworkers Supply store in West Springfield, MA
If you are looking for wood, Berkshire Products in Sheffield, Ma.
Herringtons in Hillsdale, NY is really a lumber yard but Ed Herrington decided a few years ago that he didn't want to be pushed out of business by HD so he expanded.
Lindell? in Cannan, Ct has a lot of stuff.

Woodworkers Supply in W Spfld is long gone. They had a chain but closed a few years ago. No real loss. Woodcraft has a store in W Spfld.
You are right. Between checking their web site and responding to you I flipped the names.

Hi Drew - I'll be watching your thread with interest since I visit my in-laws north of Albany a couple of time a year. There used to be a nice Woodworker's Warehouse in Glens Falls but it's long gone. I'll have to ask my BIL where he and his brothers go for machinery and supplies now....

As others have said, I don't think there is anywhere. I plan on making a trip to springfield, MA to go to the Woodcraft there but was hoping there was someplace closer. Where north of Albany?
I live 1/2 hour from woodcraft and still prefer ordering over the web. Actually I can get a better selection and pricing this way. There was a decent palce in the Berkshires. A small hardware store that carried a lot of decent woodworking tools. There's a real good antique tool place in the berkshires I recall but can't think of the name offhand. There's a new place that opened in Springfield that's part of a chain that sells a lot of woodworking stuff. Have the flyer at home. Will try to look it up. You might as well go to Hartford as well... http://www.coastaltool.com best prices on many tools and machines.
Like everyone else - Rochester is closet for me at "WoodCraft" or click and ship.
Someone should open a store in Syracuse area, although we do have "Syracuse Industrial Sales" (Erie Blvd.) - mostly power equipment and a good selection of accessories, but nothing like a Woodcraft !

"Where north of Albany?"Hudson Falls/Glens Falls area...lots wood, no wood stores :(.
Hello All,
Not to high jack the post but, seems there are a lot of wood workers in northern NY. Any of you near Tupper lake? I would like to meet up with some to exchange ideas and fish, err a wood stories.
Bob Tupper Lake, NY
Bob, join the NWA. http://www.woodworker.org.
Hell, if you're willing to go to Connecticut or Massachusetts, why not think about driving up to Ottawa and checking out Lee Valley Tools, Busy Bee Tools (Grizzly North), Preston Hardware (Delta and SteelCity) and Legere Tools (General & Delta)?Regards,
Unfortunately, I don't think there are any. There used to be a Woodworker's Warehouse in Plattsburgh till the owners wrecked the company and went bankrupt. As well, there used to be a Woodcraft store near Latham (exit 9 off of I81?) until it closed last Summer. Basically, that leaves woodworkers in upstate NY with no options but the internet.
I have seen a few ads in the paper (Poughkeepsie Journal) recently for a store in Kingston that lists wood working machinery specifically in their ads. I didn't get the paper before I left today but will look for it later and try to find the name.

The only places I've found are Curtis Lumber in Ballston Spa and Allerdice Building Supply in Saratoga Springs. Really bummed me out when Woodcraft closed. Unfortunately, now when I need something and I can't find it locally I use Amazon. Just not the same as killing an hour browsing the store.
As others have said, there's about nothing. I buy 'routine' stuff at my local hardware stores or even Lowes or Home Depot, buy most everything else online (cheaper anyway than Woodcraft), and wait around for the Saratoga Woodworking Show every March, to see what I'm missing and stock up on bits, blades and abrasives.
I found the ad in todays paper.

Probably an hour and a half to two hour drive for you, but Tool Factory Outlet is in Goshen, NY. They also have a website. They recently expanded and have large(cabinet saws, drum sanders, etc) and small (drills, bessey clamps, etc) tools on display. Ive seen most of the popular brands on display there: PM,delta, festool, panasonic, dewalt, Makita, etc. John
Check out Syracuse Industrial Supply in Syracuse. General, porter cable and Festol dealer with lots of stock. I've dealt with them for years. 315.478.5751
There is still a Woodcraft store in Rochester and Rockler in Buffalo, these are the two stores I have to go to, as I live in Syracuse and I too have no where else to go, fortunately I am a salemen and cover these markets.
Wish someone would correct this situation for us woodworkers in upstate NY.
