In the current issue of FW it was suggested to use equal parts of varnish/urethane, linseed oil and turpentine for a rub on finish. I tried it and found the urethane precipitated when the turpentine was added. It could be stirred into a suspension, but when applied the uretane hardened immediately and created a mess that had to be scraped off? Any suggestions.

Andy, I don't pretend to be any expert on this, but I'll share my experience for what that's worth. I'm experimenting with the same finish. I've used polyurethane as the varnish in the turps/oil/varnish mix in the past and although I didn't have the problem that you did, I felt the poly in the finish made it look a bit too plastic, something I was keen to avoid when going after the wiped on thin look finish. I've just begun to experiment with using alkyd varnish in place of the poly. It develops a lot of gloss even in very thin coats (more gloss than I wanted, but that's OK) and seems a little "warmer". I've also switched to mineral spirits instead of turpentine, It seems to give me more time to mess with the finish than the turpentine did and the turpentine made my whole house smell, the low odor thinner seems to do that less. I know this didn't specifically answer your question, but I thought I'd share something that works for me. I've only seen the problem you described when mixing water based products with solvent thinners, or maybe with products that had begun to catalyze in the can.
