Can anyone comment on the shoe-type guard on the old dewalt RAS. Does it work ok without being too much of a nusance? It would be good to hear a little about it before spending the $150 or so that it would cost. thanks.
There is also an option of a chain type guard (nylon?) which I read somewhere is used by those who find the standard guard getting in the way, but this substitute may not be as safe.

I'm going to assume your only using the saw for crosscutting. In that case I don't see a need for the guards. the saw is mounted on a track so it isn't going anywhere, and the only way to get hurt crosscutting is to have your hand or any other body part in the blades path. your work is butted up against the fence, and all projectiles travel away from you. so in my not so humble opinion if someone can manage to hurt themselves crosscutting with a RAS they must be stupid enough to deserve it.
ripping is a whole different matter though, which I consider an accident waiting to happen.
BTW you've got yourself a nice saw, so if you don't already have a good blade, you might want to think about getting one instead.
