   Dale,

   If you are staining your wood, it may be a good idea to apply your wood patch after your stain coat(s) and before your clearcoats. I am assuming that your clear coats are compatible with your patch material. A simple test would confirm this, sometimes depending on the stain, the wood patch would take clear coats differently than your wood, your test will also reveal any issues with this.

   By keeping your wood patch under your clear coats, you will have a long lasting repair (it will last as long as the finish over it).

   Technically, as long as you keep your wood patch under your clear coats, you will be fine. Your stains will tend to give you problems because wood and wood patch do not take stain the same regardless of what is printed on the label.

   *Thanks Jessie for the input. I used 'Fruitwood' oil base stain on Alder. I tried the Fruitwood wood patch & found that it was much darker than the stained wood. I substituted neutral patch & colored w/stain pens to get match prior to applying finish coats. This worked well.
