That's pretty close to the price of a new one. The model number may be different now but that is delta's least expensive bench top planer.
Sorry I didnt say Canada at first,up here that sells around $400 new.does that model# look correct to you I assume your in the USA thanks Pete.

Ditto to Flacon -- that's way too much $$ for the 12" model used. Did you go look at it?

Go for the two speed 12 1/2 (or is it 13?). I think the machine model # is 22-580.
Have one of the 22-580 and it's is very dependable and as accurate as you want it to be.
Here' what to ask:
Whacha' been planing? (Oak, etc.)
How mucha ya been planing?
This question is gonna take some finaglling, but the answer is valuable. You have to find out if owner ever accidentally set depth of cut so deep that tha machine bogged down mid cut. If you can get this answer, then you definitely want to do some test cuts: All that high-speed, high mass torque has to go somehwere when the machine bogs down. Tranfers force into the four "posts" that make up this assembly. Your test cut will tell you if you need 1) No adjustment, everything's fine, 2) Minor adjustment, no big deal or 3) This thing planes great shims...oh oh!
Also, order up a coupla three drive belts: Easy to replace and the part number is 22-563. BTW, Delta is reorganizing their parts distribution system and they state they won't be shipping for at least another week. Cost for the belt is between 15 and 25. Easy to put on once you LOOSEN THE PIVOT SCREW ON THE HEAD ASSEMBLY. This belt wil not stretch!!!
Good luck.
BTW: The price is good for a once-used-got-nowhere-to-keep-it deal. Maybe a littl too much otherwise, IMHO. TRry to shave a few bucks off anyway!

1-I saw it in a conignment store 2-Canadian funds possible model # difference but it did say 12". I was offerd to test it outside the store or take it home for 2 days,I was checking the height leverworked fine ,put my hands around the motor assembly and seemed tight around the posts(no play) the feed rollers looked okay but had dust and small chips, there are no accesories.I was thinking about what you said about not being parallel, how finicky is blade height adjust.I think I will try it out,I will keep you posted if you dont mind thanks Pete.
By blade height adjustment you are meaning either 1) Depth of cut which is very precise and easy to do once you get the feel of the hand crank. TIP: Use a micrometer to correlate the windowed scale displaying the measurement versus whaat you are actually getting. 2) If you are referring to setting the knives on the head... not a bad deal. TIP: First time try taking a digital/polaroid foto for reference before replacing knives. Does the machine have the factory supplied wrench(s)? Go slow and you'll do fine. A-member to unplug it!Let me know how it goes.wobeba
I havent gone back yet but will give it a try sometime this week,I will keep you posted.cheers Pete.
Pete, the model number is correct for the "old" 12" Delta planer. Although it's been replaced by the Delta Shopmaster TP300, up until recently it was pretty easy to find it new at around $200US. They may be just about gone though.
The $150 Canadian translates to $119US. That's a much better deal! If they'll let you try it out, it's worth a shot.

Self indexing and ss rollers? Time for me to upgrade! Don't have the indexers... that would be great!
Ok, that answers that question. I'd be very bummed not having the self-indexing blades!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Forestgirl, I hate to be contrary, but the TP 300 does not have a cutterhead lock or indexing knives. Maybe you're thinking of the TP400?
Hey, Kent, correcting that mistake isn't being "contrary" :-) I saw "snipe control" and mistook it for a cutterhead lock. I'll go back up and correct my post. Thanks for letting me know I screwed up.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
