I found a used 16″ Laguna bandsaw and would like your input on whether it is a good saw to buy. Speaking to the owner on the phone, I learned that it is about 6 years old, but nearly new – he is retired and no longer interested in woodworking. It includes two sets of ceramic guides and the mobility kit. Unlike the current model, the LT16, his saw only has one dust port, no foot brake, and a 2-1/2HP motor (not Baldor). He is asking $1600 Cdn for it – the LT16 on Laguna’s site is $1795 US, on sale for $1615.50 US. I do believe that to get a Laguna north of the border increases the price significantly. I will do my research tonight, and call him tomorrow to go have a look at the saw. What do you think? EDIT: As Dennis noted below, it’s a lot for a 6-year old saw without some of the feature of the current model (3HP Baldor motor, brake) but does include the mobile base, which I want. Negotiations tomorrow…

Hi Chris:
Good band saw -- far too much money. Let the seller know what new saw costs and see if he will offer a more reasonable price.
Dennis
Dennis,
Thanks for the input. I do plan to try to talk him down. Or maybe get him to throw in some other wood/tools with the saw.
Chris
I just sold my entire shop worth of power tools. They were all in very excellent used condition. I don't believe anyone could take better care of their tools than I did. They were in a environmentally controlled environment, and never subjected to rust. I spent quite a bit of time on setup when I bought them new, and the tools performed well because of it.
I was selling them in this condition for approx. 2/3's of what they sell for new. What's the point of getting a used piece of equipment for the same money as a new one.
As far as mobile bases go, you can build one for less than $50.00 that works perfectly. In fact, I still have 2 of the kits from Woodcraft where you just supply the 2X2 runners. So, my point is, you can make a bandsaw mobile for about $30.
If you like the saw, make him an offer based on research. Go to ebay, and research completed sales on bandsaws. That will give you a very good idea of what they're selling for.
Jeff
