I have the opportunity to buy an old Sheldon metalworking lathe. I know little about it, except that the guy who owned it had good tools in general. Would this be good for turning wood?

Any metal cutting lathe would be excellent for turning wood. You'll just have to make a simple tool rest to bolt to the lathe bed.
Since the lathe has a feed screw you can use regular metal tool bits to automatically turn cylindrical work.
The only thing not in the Shelden's bag of tricks is turning 'out board' (that is, for turning large bowls and faceplate work larger than the 'swing over the ways' capacity.
I, at one time owned and used three metal lathes not only for metal turning, but wood turning as well. If the machine runs and is not the flat leather belt driven king, GRAB IT!
Most of the assessorys you'll need come with the lathe (Saving a ton of money) And other parts you'll make yourself on that lathe. Be sure to get a three jaw chuck,a faceplate and one dead and one live dead center with it. any extra 'tooling' would be very useful, but if not those 'frills' are available. G,Luck. Stein. Oh, I almost forgot ask for a manual and any change gears for that lathe.
