Hello,
this is my first post. I am italian, so please forgive my english.
A while ago I purchased from Ebay a used Record plane number 4. The ad sayd it did not have original parts, but that it was working. When I received it I sadly found out that the plane could not work because the so called depth adjustment lever is too small and cannot push the iron to a complete run up and down. Shipping to Italy is too expensive and it is not worth returning it. So, can you suggest something? Maybe I can ask Record if they have spare parts. But I could not find their website. We don’t have in Italy market fleas where you can buy used tools.
Thanks for any advice,
Enrico

"Maybe I can ask Record if they have spare parts"
Enrico,
It is my understanding that Record is no longer manufacturing or in business at all. Perhaps some of the hand tool aficionados here in KNOTS will reply to your post and advise you where to find spare parts for your Record plane. Good luck.

If you drop me a note of your postal address, (to me only), I will send you the yoke you need. Do please confirm it is the yoke which is faulty, it could be a non-standard cap iron which is causing the problem.
On my planes, the record yoke is cast, whilst the stanley version is two bits of bent steel. That may help to identify yours.
The cost should be negligible if it is only the yoke.

It could be the iron - too thick to allow the yoke to reach the cap iron. Or it could be an old woodie iron.
Could be a number of things. A couple of pictures would help.

Hello David,
I replied to you and wrote my address. It is very nice of you.
Anyway, I would like to add pictures of what I think is the problem.
Do you think it is possible to understand if I am right?
Thanks a lot,
Enrico
Enrico, the yoke should be captured by the shoulders of the adjustment screw. Almost remove the screw and pivot the yoke up, then screw the adjustment in at the same time allowing the rounded ends of the yoke to drop down to register either side of the adjustment screw in the channel provided. Unless of course I am telling you what you already know, in which case please forgive me.
I followed your directions. The plane works nicely now. You were very nice to take some of your time to help me out with my plane problem.
I really thank you very very much.Enrico
Now that has made my day Enrico. I hope you have fun, and keep posting even if you do not have a problem!
Best wishes, David
Also, don't worry about your English. You communicate just fine, and welcome to Knots! I've learned a LOT here -- you'll find it a good friend to your woodworking. My goal is for my work to outlast me. Expect my joinery to get simpler as time goes by.
Just out of curiosity, where exactly are you ? I live about half way between Milano and Bergamo.
