Does anyone know of some good places to find used stationary tools. I’m a rookie at all this, and dont’ want to spend all the money for a state-of-the-art shop until I can actually use all the tools properly and effectively. I’m most interested in finding a jointer and planer at this point.

1st. Enter Profile information. It's a courtesy.
2nd. Try a 'wanted to buy' ad in the local paper. Be specific, drill press or whatever. Worked for me.

This is a great way to get top-quality equipment and develop a new hobby (rebuilding machines) at the same time. Surfing the tools/machinery section of your local paper is a good start. You should also acquaint yourself with what to look for and what to avoid. http://www.owwm.com/ is a great resource for articles on how to buy and people who really know what they're doing.
Used machines without motors are much easier to find than used motors, so resist the urge to buy a machine without unless you have the replacement lined up and the price is really right.

Best way to go, my entire shop is filled with "old iron", mostly Delta and Boice-Crane. A friend has a shop filled with very heavy duty Northfield, a #4 14" tablesaw, 32" band saw, 24" planner and a great 16" pattermakers jointer, (infeed table tilts up to 5 deg). Because of a little sweat equity, he has all that for under $10,000. Try to match that at the local Woodcraft store.
"Best way to go, my entire shop is filled with "old iron","Actually, according to some of the aficionados who hang out at http://www.owwm.com/, it "old ARN"
I've had some luck going to auctions. I bought my Jet cabinet saw w/50" fence at auction - 1 year old in perfect condition for $800.

Another place to look is Craig's List:

Second the motion that you fill in your geographic location in your profile. It really helps with questions like this one

I like craigslist, but just a report that the newest scary scam is to post something expensive but relativly small (digial camera) for sale and when the buyer somes to buy it ( meeting in parking lot of a dept store ) being robbed.
There was a newspaper article and a news report here on that in the past 3-4 days1 - measure the board twice, 2 - cut it once, 3 - measure the space where it is supposed to go 4 - get a new board and go back to step 1
Thanks for all the advice...and my profile has been updated - rookie mistake.
Wow. Sounds like it'd be a good idea to bring along a friend with a shotgun when doing these transactions.Serial killers shooting random bicyclists and pedestrians, now muggers hanging out on Craigslist; what is the USA coming to?
I still use it, but make sure to meet in a nice public location.1 - measure the board twice, 2 - cut it once, 3 - measure the space where it is supposed to go 4 - get a new board and go back to step 1
"what is the USA coming to?" Nowhere it's not been before. Just a different venue.
As a woman, I am quite accustomed to being extremely careful about meetings with people I don't know. Men are a bit spoiled in that respect.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
