There is a web site just for old tools, they have some manuals and diagrams. Don't remember the address. KDM

A',
Is this the machine you're looking at (see photo below)? Here's some information on this machine as well as the manufacturer.

DAMN.. Now THAT is a Planer!

Porter jointers are well known as pretty good machines, in the Old WW Machines world. They are always worth at least what you paid, if you didn't OVERPAY! If it's a good deal, go for it.
Where do you live. There are different guys around who work on these. Let me know.

Porter jointers are very well regarded. Based uon the design of that one, it should be no big deal to adjust it. My used equip. delaer's faovirte jointer is the Porter, and I regard him as quite knowledgable. The fellows on OWWM should be able to wallk you through the proper adjsutment. The design of this jointer is quite similar to the later model Olivers.By the way, $850 for this machine, assuming the motor is fine, is what I would regard as an excellent price from a buyer's perspective.Alanhttp://www.alanturnerfurnituremaker.com

THANK YOU
BILL SANDERS
If you buy the Porter, and have trouble with finding a manual, then I think a manual from a newer Oliver would be helpful in terms of making the tables co-planer. I have one for a 20" Oliver I recently acquired, so feel free to give a shout, although there may be one already posted to the OWWM site. Enjoy the new wide jointer. I still have a 12" oldie with a Byrd head that is invaluable to me. It is a shame that wide jointers are so spendy, frequently being more than a planer of similar width. Go figure, as there is a lot less engineering to the jointer, fewer gears, moving parts, etc. I don't think I have ever understood this, but I do note that the weight is similar. My 20" jointer is 2500#, and the companion planer, an Oliver 299 (24"), is 2800#.Alan

$850.00
What a steal!! Many times, the adjustment can be as simple as some "gunk" stuck in the railways of the infeed table. The fence is worth $850!! Buy it, and if not, I'll take it. You should have no trouble getting it flat, even if you have to regrind it, for that price.

Here's a pic of mine, after a complete restoration.

If it is like the one that Dan posted a photo of, all you need to do to adjust the table is to loosen the bolt that hold the bottom portion of the sloped ways to the base.
You may want to jamb a temporary leg under the end of the top to hold it up when you loosen the bolts.
Agape,
1) do you know what your name means in Greek?
2)I can smell that Porter surfacer that J Chan has pictured from here. When you see substantial heavy castings like that, plus that type of bed adjusting mechanism, you know that you have a Machine. Assuming there are no structural faults like cracks (unlikely unless it has been handled by aliens or dropped from a dizzy height) I would be frantic to buy it and restore it. 12 inches is a very good size to have!
"12 inches is a very good size to have!"
Yeah, most men would love to have 12 inches, most have to make due with 6! hee hee
Sorry, feeling goofy and immature this morning. Too much of a straight line.
