Hello,
Does anyone have any recomendations for me. I am looking to buy used windsor chairmaking tools. I have tried ebay, but cannot find what im looking for. Was wondering if anyone knows of a site that sells these specialty tools. How can I put the word out to individuals that may have spares or duplicates that they may want to sell?
thanks

Matt,
Highland Hardware in Atlanta has a nice selection of tools designed for building Windsor chairs.

Thanks! I have been on that website before and they have what I need. I was just looking for some second hand tools. These tools can be pretty expensive, especially when you're buying a lot of them.
I appreciate your help!

Like FB said...HH also try http://www.traditionalwoodworker.com
Finding used in such a specialty will take a long time. Buy new! There's plenty of places selling the tools new or look in the back of FWW for the old tool dealers. Plenty of reputable guys selling traditional tools.
If you have not done so already, go to the following link (http://www.windsorchairresources.com/) and find all kinds of information regarding Windsor Chairs. They also have a "swap shop" where one can p/u used items. However I have not seen much activity on this feature. Perhaps if you post similarly on that website someone will respond favorably to your request.
Personally, I agree with the other poster about buying new. It will take a long time to acquire these tools and you will not save as much as you think. Here are some places I highly recommend.
compass plane and travisher - The Crown Plane
Spoon bits and reamer - Fred Emhoff
drawknife and inshave (scorp) - Genuine Forgery
Adze - Country Workshops
Good Luck!
Termites,
Also try Dave's Shaves for low angle spokeshaves, Barr Tools for Scorps and Adzes, and crown plane company for compass planes and travishers. Also Mike Dunbar's website sells some tools. Are you going to be taking a class? None of this stuff is cheap, nor is it floating about like ordinary woodworking tools. Many of these are very specialized, handmade, and will last forever. I'm in the process of gathering a chairmaker's toolkit for a Windsor class I'll be taking this summer. I was looking for used and found none available. I was also warned not to go with the inexpensive mass produced tools. So I'll just pay the money and pick these things up one at a time until I've got what I need. Good luck,
Mike
Of the tools needed to build a Windsor, which specific ones are you interested in purchasing used? Spokeshaves and drawknives are common on ebay, but the quality is often suspect. Some of the specialty tools (inshave, scorp, spoon bits, travisher) are occassionally found 'in the wild' but again, are often in rather poor shape.
