I quite fancy one of those clamp straight edges from Lee Valley.
Has anybody tried one?

Hi,
I've never tried the Lee Valley one (it looks good) but years ago I bought several similar guide/clamps from Woodworker's Warehouse (Trendlines), Basically they were a straight edge 1/2" x 2" x 54" built up with a light-duty cam-actuated clamp.
They are great for cutting sheets of plywood down to managable sizes (I use a dewalt cordless trimming saw).
I've used them for straight edges for layout, and router guides and even in a pinch for a light-duty 48-inch bar clamp.
The L-V ones look good. I'd give 'em a closer look.

I've got a set of the Tru-Grip Clamp-N-Tool guides. I'm assuming the L-V ones are pretty similar. They've come in real handy on lots of occasions - for most of the same uses that David C. mentioned. The Tru-Grip Back-to-Back clamps (or something similar) are also worth looking at. They can double as a straight edge guide, but have clamping cams on both the bottom and top. I'm often forced to use my TS as a workbench. The B-to-B's clamp nicely to the TS top with the bottom cams, then the top cams hold the workpiece(s) for routing, gluing, etc.
Waddaya mean it wont fit through the door?
Thanks chaps for your insight.
I was using a T square the other day as a guide to put biscuits in the middle of a book case, every time I turned the machine on,the torque moved my hold on the T square. It occurred to me then how nice it would be to be able to clamp the straight edge.

lol... see your point. cheers to you in gods country..." Feed the good wolf....."
Cicero,
I purchased a True Grip Straight Edge with tool guide ( http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000224DB/103-9735357-7262250?v=glance), mine is the 54 inch model.
The tool guide I mounted to my router and use it for dados (straight and stop). I have even used it for rabbiting and as a straight edge for my skill saw. I highly recommend one. I see you hail from New Zealand, so the link is for Amazon, hope this helps.
